Academy for Lifelong Learning

The Academy, in collaboration with the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies, is a centre for intellectually curious adults who are interested in exploring and understanding the world around them. The principal focus is a series of 40 workshops in current affairs, the arts, sciences, and social sciences. All workshops are facilitated by members and all classes are conducted by members who research and make presentations on topics of interest. Workshops run from September to April and generally meet for two hours every other week. In addition to the workshops, the Academy also offers a series of Forums and Talks during the academic term. These are lectures by senior academics, writers, and acknowledged experts in wide-ranging fields. The Academy also offers a series of walks and lunches. The Academy is an independent volunteer-run organization. More information at link below.

By way of introduction, Casey House Foundation was established in 1992 and raises approximately $1.4 million a year in support of Casey House Community Programs that include:

  • Four Casey House nurses and our volunteer team managing and caring for a regular caseload of 100 individuals at any one time in our Home Hospice Program, providing ongoing medical care and support throughout the year;

 As well, we raise much-needed funds to support:

  • 24 hour on-call medical care, giving those living with HIV/AIDS access to doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals;

  • The Care for the Caregiver Program;

  • The Resident Care and Comfort Program that helped to purchase the basics like groceries, eye glasses and TTC tickets for medical appointments;

  • Bereavement support for family members, friends and loved ones;

  • Casey House’s Recreation Therapy Program;

  • Casey House’s Complementary Therapy Program that includes massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, aromatherapy and therapeutic touch.

Since 1988, Casey House has distinguished itself worldwide as a leader in providing supportive, respite, palliative and end of life care for people living with HIV/AIDS in our residential hospice, home hospice and community programs. Our mission is to assist the women and men with HIV/AIDS in living their lives to the fullest for as long as we are needed.

I look forward speaking to you again in the near future. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at . Thank you so much Mary Ellen.
